Overview

The Kim Laboratory combines seismology and data science to advance the understanding of earthquake phenomena and to build a disaster-resilient society. We analyze data on ground shaking and the Earth's structure, characterizing seismic waves and reproducing earthquakes with numerical models to understand how earthquakes occur.

In recent years we have actively adopted machine learning: deep-learning-based seismic phase picking, real-time seismic intensity prediction with graph neural networks, and Transformer-based classification of volcanic earthquakes, among other applications of data science to diverse seismic data.

We also put research into practice for local disaster resilience — building a citizen-participatory seismic observation network with low-cost MEMS sensors and developing "Cocoico," a web app that suggests evacuation destinations tailored to each user's needs — working closely with community organizations in Yokohama.
